TN FLOOD RELIEF:BAALU MEETS AMIT SHAH

Based on the preliminary reports by the group of Ministers as directed by the Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin on the extensive damages caused by the Northeast monsoon rains in various districts of Tamil Nadu, the DMK Parliamentary Party leader T.R. Baalu presented a memorandum to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, seeking Government of India (GOI) assistance of Rs.2,629.29 Crore for flood relief in the state. The Sriperumbudur M.P. who met the Home Minister in New Delhi on November 17, later told reporters that the Chief Minister, Mr. M.K. Stalin had directed him to submit a memorandum on the deaths, extent of damages to properties and crops from the excessive rains and consequent floods in the worst-affected districts and seeking GOI’s urgent financial assistance for relief and rehabilitation. While the entire Tamil Nadu from October 1, 2021 to November 18, 2021, had recorded a total rainfall of 480.30 mm, 61 per cent in excess of the normal rainfall for this period during the Northeast monsoon season, the rainfall was particularly excessive in two extended spells. From October 25 to November 7, the State received 52.30 per cent excess rainfall, between November 8-14, it was 49.60 per cent excess rainfall, over and above the annual average. Mr. Baalu said the monsoon fury was felt the most in the districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Vellore and Kanyakumari down south, which were severely affected by the rains and floods....
