The more than seven decade-old Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) holds the record for being the first political party in Indian political history to form a wing for the Youth. The wing had a humble beginning when then promising youth icon Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin launched it along with his friends at a saloon in Gopalapuram in 1967, little realizing that he was sowing the seeds, which would serve as the party’s nursery in the days to come. The Youth wing was formally launched at the Youth conference at the Jhansi Rani Park in Madurai in 1980 by Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in the presence of Perasiriyar K Anbazhagan, M.K Stalin and others. Two years later, party Supremo Kalaignar declared him as DMK Youth Wing Convener at the second Youth wing conference in Trichy. Soon Mr. Stalin visited the nook and corner of Tamil Nadu and strengthened the Youth wing as a force to reckon with. He was rewarded for his hard work and elevated as Youth wing secretary. Mr. Stalin held the position for the next three years as the Youth wing grew by leaps and bounds. Later Vellakoil Saminathan, the present Minister for Information and Publicity served as Youth wing secretary. In July 2019, Udhayanidhi Stalin took up the mantle with a mission to recruit 30 lakh new members and has taken several initiatives to achieve the goal. As part of the initiatives, Mr Udhayanidhi, representing Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency, launched an exclusive website for the Youth wing on December 2 at ‘Anbagam’, the wing’s headquarters in Chennai to attract the third generation youth, who are showing enormous interest in joining the wing with a commitment to work for the progress of the party. The website, www.youthwingdmk.in has been designed to serve as a platform to carry forward Mr Udhayanidhi’s statements, party programmes, wing’s activities, details of party publications and functionaries.
