Subavee Heads Social Justice Vigilance Committee

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has appointed Suba Veerapandian, widely known as Subavee, Tamil politician, author and orator as Chairperson of the newly constituted ‘Social Justice Vigilance Committee (SJVC)’. The SJVC announced by Mr. Stalin in the Assembly recently, will oversee whether the ‘Rule of Reservation’ guaranteed by Law as a measure of Social Justice, is being properly implemented in admissions to educational institutions and in employment and promotions in Government services. Suba Veerapandian hails from a family in Karaikudi with strong roots in the ‘Dravidian Movement’ and has over the years taken up causes of Tamil Nationalism. He now heads the new SJVC, which will be a watchdog panel to ensure that the ‘Dravidian Model’ of Social Justice is not derailed. The ‘Social Justice Vigilance Committee’ will also recommend actions to be taken by the State Government to rectify lapses in the implementation of the reservation policy, which is at the heart of the Social Justice ethos of the ‘Dravidian Movement’. The Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin had first announced the proposed SJVC in September this year, coinciding with the Centenary of the issuance Our Bureau TN CM MK Stalin with members of Social Justice Vigilance Committee THE RISING SUN of the ‘First Communal G.O.’ on September 16, 1921, by the then Justice Party Government in the erstwhile Madras Presidency, which had laid the foundation for the ‘Reservation Scheme’ for various communities to promote social equity and justice. The other members of the eight-member SJVC include K. Dhanavel, retired IAS Officer, Swaminathan Devadoss, former Pro ViceChancellor, Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology, Manushyaputhiran, Tamil Poet and public speaker, A. Jaison, Prof. R. Rajendran, G. Karunanidhy, General Secretary of the All India Other Backward Classes (AIOBC) Federation, and Dr. Shanthi Raveendranath. The announcement of the SJVC is considered a “very significant milestone” in the DMK Government’s efforts to ensure the continuity of the over century-long ‘Social Justice tradition’ going back to the founding fathers of the ‘South Indian Liberal Federation‘ and later the ‘Justice Party’, like P.T.
